Building a natural stone patio

Building-a-natural-stone

The construction of a natural stone patio requires an adequate planning, which includes the selection of materials that are functional and attractive, that decide on the tools necessary for the execution of the work and the fixing of stones. The planning stage includes the estimation of the expense and, therefore, the budget, the preparation of the plans and the size of the patio in proportion to the total area of the space where the patio will be installed. The stone courtyards make use of natural stones, slabs and / or paving stones. Another important consideration is the selection of the right tools to install the stones. Once you have attended to these preliminaries in advance, building a natural stone patio involves a couple of additional simple steps.

Like any other project, detailed planning helps save a lot of effort and substantial sums of money when undertaking the construction of a natural stone patio. It is always worth preparing a complete drawing of the patio and the area it will occupy. In this way, it can be guaranteed that the size of the patio is proportional to the size of the house or building that contains it. In addition, the drawings and plans will allow the builder to accurately assess the amount of various materials needed for the purpose, and thus get a good idea of the cost of procuring those materials. In this way, the builder can choose the materials that fit his budget.

The selection of stone should be based on its durability and beauty. It is expected that a natural stone patio will be smooth and flat. Since a uniformly leveled surface is ideal for stone courtyards, the materials chosen must have an almost similar width.

As the paving stones and stone slabs are flat by nature, with not many curves or irregular lines in their exteriors, they are the most suitable for this purpose. The range of natural stones that one can use varies from slate stone and mosaic to pebble tiles. These stones can impart a more natural and genuine look.

The area that will contain the patio should be excavated with the help of picks and shovels. Mason saws are used to cut stones in different angels, according to the shape they should have, while a level of carpenter is used to ensure the uniformity of the surfaces. A suitable adhesive agent, such as concrete, is used to secure the stones in place.

First, the concrete needs to be poured. This is followed by the positioning of the stones in the area already excavated, according to the plan's plan. Once the stones have been placed and the concrete is dried, a sealing agent should be applied over the stones so that they do not stain and, therefore, the patio can retain its aesthetic appeal.
